In Nazi-occupied Norway, Oslo University physicist Dr. Rolf Pedersen (Kirk Douglas) joins resistance fighter Knut Straud's (Richard Harris) underground group in a desperate effort to smash the factory where the Germans are making heavy water, an essential element in their efforts to build an atom bomb.
